Whitehall Cricket Club
Martin Palmer
Martin Palmer                Mart                Scouser                PMA                Born in Liverpool (unlucky).
Overseas player Martin joined Whitehall at
time when they required some much needed youth
and dashing good looks to attract the crowds back
to Beckett’s Park.  Visiting teams are often visibly
upset when their spouse’s take a fancy to the sports
car
driving fitness fanatic and this has worked to
Whitehall’s advantage when the opposition’
sconcentration has been diverted from the
game.  Playing his natural game is his only
option as he has no real grasp of the rules,
or so he would have us believe in order to
avoid being asked to umpire at square leg
after he has cheaply given his wicket away,
slogging at his second ball faced after he has
supposedly got his eye in.  Always a major
contender for the most fielding points gained in a
season, despite only playing those games where 5
hours of sunshine are
guaranteed. His catching prowess in the
close field is only surpassed by his ability to
find a much needed 50 when coming in to
bat at the lower end of the order after the
ball has been turned into a giant
marshmallow by the alleged stronger
batsmen – usually just 4 overs into the
innings.

Some still maintain that his recent meteoric
rise up the batting order is solely attributed
to him eventually marrying Mick’s daughter
and so this season could prove to be
something of a test for the popular loud
mouth as a there is now a new skipper in
place who will not be as easily bribed,
although blackmail may reap dividends.
Martin never knows when he’s beaten
(because he has no grasp of the rules) and
his consistent volume in the field (although
incomprehensible to anyone outside his
native Liverpool) annoys opponents to the
extent that they often declare/concede long
before common sense would dictate in order
to get back to the relative peace and quiet of their
homes.  Predictions for 2006 include
him not playing his first game until the sunny climes
of late June, pulling his hamstring during one of his
infamous warm up sessions, his wage demands
being rebuked for the fourth year running and
eventually replacing his inherited Craig White’s old
bat which has always been too heavy for him
anyway.  Imagine how good this lad could be if he
actually trained/played more than five games a
season.  P.S.  His tea’s are always a lavish affair, all
brand names and chocolate fingers, no expense
spared – he
will never play for Yorkshire!
